Danica treats silence as a normal part of an hour rather than a gap to be filled, which suits anyone who has spent a whole day being talked at. She is twenty-six and works from De Pijp, close enough to the Albert Cuyp that her mornings are noisy and her evenings are not. Serbian and English are both at hand, and she will drop the small talk altogether if the room seems to want that. She says what she will and will not do at the outset, in a level voice, and nothing about the way she says it invites a negotiation.

Danica decides which bookings she takes and may decline any of them; she sets the limits for what a session includes, says what they are, and may end a visit at any point, as the terms set out.
